Rev. Hugh, Teacher & Resident Monk
Rev. Hugh Gould is the resident monk and teacher. He was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 1988 by Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett and trained as a novice monk at Shasta Abbey for 9 years. Following Rev. Master Jiyu’s death in 1996 he continued his training with Rev. Master Daizui MacPhillamy, one of Rev. Master Jiyu’s senior disciples, at the Fugen Forest Hermitage for 9 more years. During that time Rev. Hugh received the Dharma Transmission in 1997, became a teacher in 2000, and was named a Master in 2003. In 2006 Rev. Hugh joined the community of Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey in northern England where he was a resident monk for 13 years. During that time he worked in and was head of the maintenance department, served as an assistant to the Abbot, Rev. Master Daishin Morgan, and ran the department in charge of the monastery’s finances. In June, 2021 Rev. Hugh was appointed as prior of the Eugene Buddhist Priory.
